The “Satyug” project promotes sustainable waste management in the Himalayan region by improving waste segregation, strengthening local waste-processing systems, training green workers, and engaging communities in environmental conservation.

Project Satyug, implemented by Healing Himalayas in Reckong Peo, Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, addresses the growing challenge of waste management in remote Himalayan communities. Previously, households and businesses commonly mixed different types of waste before dumping or burning it, contributing to environmental pollution, health risks, and damage to the region's tourism potential. With support from IDS, the project developed a community-based waste management ecosystem focused on awareness, segregation, workforce development, and improved waste processing. Communities were educated about the importance of separating wet and dry waste at the source, while local workers were trained to manage and process waste safely and professionally. A key component of the initiative was the revitalization of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), which serves as a sorting and recovery center for collected waste. The facility is now operated by approximately 15–20 trained workers, mostly women, creating both environmental and livelihood benefits. The project reached more than 1,500 households and nearly 1,000 businesses, helping assess waste-generation patterns and encourage better waste-management practices. More than 200 students from over 10 schools also participated in environmental activities, including waste collection and Himalayan trail clean-ups, with girls playing a particularly active role in environmental leadership. The initiative has resulted in a significant shift in community practices. Approximately 80–85% of waste is now properly segregated before leaving households and businesses, while open waste burning has decreased substantially. Local leaders have also begun viewing the project as a potential model for sustainable waste management across other Himalayan communities. The project demonstrates how community education, local leadership, women's employment, youth participation, and improved waste infrastructure can work together to create cleaner and more sustainable mountain communities.
